What’s inside a New Mattress?
Visit our Sleep Better page for more info on picking your mattress.
A lot of time and effort goes into designing a mattress. Factors like support, feel, comfort, durability and cost are weighed against each other in an attempt to provide options for many different sleeping styles. Each person is unique and has different needs when it comes to a mattress, that’s why our mattress brands have such a wide variety of options.
Please come in and spend some time lying down, testing our new mattress styles to evaluate the different choices Maui Bed Store offers. With all the models we have available in our showroom, we’re sure to have a great mattress for you.

Mattress Height
Foundation or Box: This is what sits on top of your frame and under your mattress, it’s only purpose in modern bedding sets is to raise the height of the mattress. We use and recommend the sturdiest and least expensive method, a renewable wood foundation for even solid support.
Mattress Support Layers
Spring units are still the most common support material but latex and visco memory foams are gaining popularity as a means to cradle the body while resting. Some have extra edge support in the form of extra coils, and some have a foam encasement, a “tub” that surrounds the spring or foam to provide a comfortable but sturdy edge. This tub is then strapped across to itself for durability. Each type of support layer has its unique benefits and feels different from the others.
Bonnell Coil: The traditional hourglass shaped coil tied to one another with a spiral wire and edged by a thicker border wire. These springs compress easily at first but get firmer as more pressure is applied.
Continuous Coil: This is one piece of wire that is shaped into each coil of the entire mattress. The spring is wrapped with a border wire that may have additional edge support and tends to be a firm and resilient sleep system. The Ameri-Spring is a continuous coil with enhanced border support to make a very solid spring unit.
Pocketed Coil: These springs are individual lengths of wire coiled into a spring and placed into a fabric “pocket” then glued to one another to form the mattress. In this way each coil moves independently of one another. The center third is “zoned” with a thicker coil to support the hips and lower back. We then place a border wire around the outside to tie the springs together to prevent the pockets from shifting. Pocket coils transfer the least amount of motion of all the spring units.
Latex: The original all foam support layer. We use 100% natural latex rubber that is inherently hypo-allergenic and antimicrobial. It’s a fast reflex foam that returns instantly to its original shape when pressure is removed. There are two processes of manufacturing latex, Dunlop, the most common, and Talalay, a process that produces the most constant and high quality latex available.
Visco: Temperature sensitive visco elastic memory foam is somewhat new in bedding, only being around fifteen years old. It’s a high density slow reflex antimicrobial foam that you “sink” unto as it conforms to your body. It customizes itself to your body every time you turn or move. Maui Bed Store has several types of memory foam including the cool touch memory foam that allows air to pass through that will help to dissipate heat.
