You may have heard (to no surprise), that a lack of sleep can reduce your ability to stay focused and alert throughout the day. But the effects of insufficient rest are not limited to your mental abilities. It can also affect your appearance. I am always in search of ways to keep a youthful glow, so I sat down with Terri Marino, Maui’s skin care expert and Rodan+Fields Independent consultant, to get the lowdown on how I could make the most of my beauty sleep.

“Beauty rest isn’t just a saying. Each night our skin cells repair themselves. A good night of sleep helps us look bright and refreshed, while a restless night results in dark circles under our eyes and a dull, gray complexion.” As a new mother with inconsistent sleep patterns, I have experienced this first hand, and wanted to learn more on how to overcome these sleep-deprived consequences.

I asked Terri what she recommended for waking up on the bright side of the bed. She told me, “A comfortable bed and pillow is important to a good night of sleep. If you are a side or belly sleeper, you can purchase a special pillow that will help you sleep on your back in order to avoid “sleep crush,” facial lines that are often mistaken for wrinkles. When we sleep on our side or face, the weight of our body along with gravity can cause diagonal lines across the forehead from the lower eyelid to the bottom of the nose and through the lip and chin.”

As a regular side and stomach sleeper, I decided to do my own product testing, to see which of our Maui Malouf pillows, would be the most encouraging to convert me into a back sleeper at the Mattress Store Maui.

Malouf’s Contour Gel Dough Memory Foam pillow: I almost bypassed trying this pillow, as I thought it would be too small to even notice it was under my head. I was pleasantly surprised to prove myself wrong. With two raised edges of varying heights, and a concave center to gently cup my head, I felt naturally supported and in healthy spinal alignment. After trying both the larger and smaller humps of the pillow under my neck, I found the smaller edge to give me the most natural feeling position. I have heard people’s concerns of memory foam “sleeping hot”, but this pillow felt very light and cool to me. Did I find my perfect pillow on the first try? Nevertheless, I must try them all!

Malouf’s Duo-Foam pillow: This pillow is made of a firm and lofty Maui Latex mattress on one side, and a more plush, softer Memory Foam mattress on the other side. Despite given the two options of support, neither one of them worked for me. Perhaps this pillow would be better suited for a larger person, as my head and neck felt too raised, and I wasn’t able to get comfortable.

Malouf’s Gel Dough High Loft Plush pillow: This Maui Gel Memory Foam is like a more substantial version of the Contour pillow that I favored, as reviewed above. Unlike the Contour pillow, this pillow provides additional support to my upper back and shoulders. This pillow felt supportive for against and I could imagine using it while watching a movie in bed. Although I found this pillow comfortable, it was still a bit too lofty for my small 5’2″ stature.

Malouf’s Zoned Dough Mid-loft Plush pillow in Peppermint: This pillow is a lot of fun to try. The mid-loft height was perfect for my frame. The mesh outer covering and aerated holes throughout this pillow give it an airy feel. The smell of peppermint also provided a cooling sensation. As someone who suffers from allergies and congestion, the peppermint infused Memory Foam helped to clear my sinuses. After a couple of minutes, my head began to tingle (I suppose because of the peppermint scent?), and for this reason, I found this pillow too invigorating. I love the construction of this pillow, but the peppermint was making me feel more awake than I care to feel when I’m trying to get my beauty sleep! We also carry this pillow in lavender and chamomile, and I’d be interested to see if those scents would be more tolerable for me.

Malouf’s Zoned Dough Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam pillow: Love this pillow. It is similar in size compared to the loftier pillows from above, but this Charcoal Foam feels the most plush. Although its a larger pillow, my head felt like it could sink into the pillow versus feeling propped up. It also gave shoulder and upper back support, which felt nice.

After all of that hard work, I believe I have my winner (drum roll please)….I have to stick with my first pick, Malouf’s Contour Gel Dough Memory Foam Maui pillow, with the Zoned Dough Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam as a close runner-up. At the end of the day, the Contour pillow felt most natural (to me) for the back sleeping position. Now, it is time to implement Terri’s advice, and start getting my beauty sleep with my new Malouf pillow (and perhaps a dab of eye cream too!).
