​First take into consideration what your primary sleeping position is. If you are a stomach sleeper, a flatter pillow will help lift your head just enough for proper spinal alignment. Usually a softer pillow is ideal for stomach sleepers. Back sleepers can use a medium firm pillow that doesn’t push the head to far forward or upward. Side sleepers can use a medium firm to firm pillow. Ideally, a side sleeper pillow is a thicker pillow that fills the gap between your mattress and head/neck, giving you proper spinal alignment.​

​When considering comfort, consider what’s inside your pillow. Some of the post common materials that fill the insides of pillows are feathers, down, memory foam, and cotton/polyester. Feather pillows can be firm, and their shape is adjustable, but the quills from the feathers CAN stick out of the pillow and poke you. Down pillows are softer than feather pillows, but are typically more expensive. Memory foam pillows are usually a bit firmer, but they adjust to your individual shape, relieving pressure points and provide better spinal alignment. And the cotton/polyester fill is usually a medium to soft support, and is typically the least expensive type of pillow.
