How to Choose the Best Mattress for You

Sealy Bestseller Firm Mattress

Getting a good night’s sleep can have a positive impact on your productivity the next day.A bad night’s sleep, however, can have negative effect on your productivity. Of course the single most aspect that can determine how well rested you are is your mattress, but how do you know which mattress is right for you?

Soft vs. Firm Mattresses

For years people have said that hard mattresses are the best, others say soft mattresses are the only way to go. Science seems to suggest otherwise but the truth is, both have advantages and disadvantages and it all depends on your needs and your comfort level.

  • Firm Mattresses– A firm mattress can help with your body’s alignment by giving your back greater support. Misalignment can cause sleep deprivation and can even worsen back pain. Another benefit of firm mattresses is that it will help open up your airway and help increase airflow while you sleep.
  • Soft Mattresses– While firm mattresses can give your back greater support, they don’t conform to your body. Some soft mattresses can conform too much causing you to sink right into it. A medium firm mattress, however, or a soft mattress top on a firm mattress can give you the support you need while still conforming to your body shape.

Mattress Types

  • Innerspring– Innerspring mattresses are still the most widely used of all mattress types. Innerspring mattresses are filled with coils that help support the top layer of the mattress while you are resting. The good news about innerspring mattresses is that they are available in a variety of firmness levels for you to choose from. Their major drawback can be with cheap innerspring mattresses, the coils might not give you enough support which can lead to back pain.
  • Memory Foam– Memory foam mattresses began to catch on about 15 years ago and have slowly been gaining popularity since. Memory foam mattresses are made of different densities of foam layered together which allows the mattress to mold to your body shape. If you have chronic back pain, memory foam might be the mattress for you since it’s design can reduce pressure on your back and neck.
  • Air Mattresses– High end air mattresses, not like the one’s you bust out over the holidays when family is visiting, are a lot like innerspring mattresses except the coils are replaced with pockets of air to give you support. The main selling point for air mattresses is its ability to be adjusted. If your sleeping partner prefers a firm bed but you prefer your mattress to be softer, you can easily adjust the air pressure in one side of the mattress.

The only way to truly know which mattress type is for you is to test some of the different types out. Bring your pillow with you when you’re mattress shopping so you can get a feel for how comfortable it will be once you’re home. Test out each mattress for 10 or 15 minutes and before the day is over you will know exactly which mattress is best for you.
